Minutes Saturday, May 2nd
Called to order 10:30 by President, Gail McLain
Gail led an opening prayer. She then challenged everyone to write down 3 or more things “They wished they knew when starting to quilt?” Gail shared her Golden Nuggets & Pearls of Wisdom with the group and asked others to share their thoughts.
Debbie Sutton with the Welcoming Committee introduced visitors: Drucye Cox, Debbie Potts, Grace Miller & Samantha Schaetz.
Sherri Frickel with the Membership Committee introduced and pinned new members: Connie Logans, Debbie Pots & Drucye Cox. Sherri conducted the drawings for wearing name badge. The winner was Klothhilde Luna and Linda Tuggle won the Door Prize.
Syble Bailey with the Sunshine Committee recognized May Birthdays: Lisa Romans, Carla Stickles, Charlotte Mathews, Janet Calvert, Gail Seward, Susan Taylor, & Karen Morgan. We serenaded them with Happy Birthday.
Robyn Shreve noted that the Quilts of Valor Committee has had several presentations in the community. They will have a table set up at the “WE CARE VET FAIR” July 24, SSQG will also be hosting a table. We will be asking for volunteers to assist in manning these 2 tables.
Sandy Burnett Explained the WIP Challenge noting that #2 is due today. She pulled #3 for the next project which is due July 4th. We will not be having a meeting that day and she noted that we have until midnight of the 4th to text her a picture of our project in order to receive our prize at the next meeting.
Charlene Mehlenbeck reported on the Retreats that are currently planned. There is an Away Retreat in Covington May 13-17. We will have our next Mini Retreat May 28-30 at Cornerstone Baptist Church. On July, 23rd-25th, we will have a Mini retreat at Christ the King Catholic Church.
Karen Moore reported on the fundraising committee. The 50/50 raffle and the Birthday Basket raffles have been successful. We will be doing our big fundraiser at the WAHA Festival in Waverly Hall in October. We will have a quilt show and be raffling off and selling several quilts. Please plan to enter up to 2 of your creations, help to set up and/or take down, and of course attend.
Brenda Bannister showed the May Block for the block of the Month committee. She noted that the patterns are handed out at each meeting and are also available on our website along with tutorials.
Anita Rodgers reported that the Community Outreach committee has been very busy. Collecting and making quilts, tote bags and walker caddies. She has kits available. Last Week the committee took 29 quilts and tote bags to the child advocacy center and 15 quilts and 14 walker caddies to an area nursing home. The 3 for a bee challenge was successful. She collected 60 quilts and gave out 20 Bee pins.
Charlene Mehlenbeck presented a great Program on Tips & Tricks. With suggestions from start to finish on completing your projects. From cleaning your machine and bobbin when starting, to tips and tools for cutting and using color catcher on your finished products to name a few.
