Minutes of SEWrority Quilting Guild

Prior to the meeting, members visited display tables for the following items:  ticket purchase for raffles, free table, t-shirt sales, retreat registration, BOM pick up & drop off, QOV block drop off, and for sale table.

  • The meeting was called to order by President, Gail McLain at 10:47 a.m.
  • Brenda Bannister introduced visitors. Visitors were: Debbie Blackwood and Linnea Grosse .  New Members, Kay Huntsman, Susan Smith, and Melissa House received their SSQG pin along with Karen Friberg, Ginny Vekasy, and Denise Fortson.   46 participants were present. 
  • Brenda Bannister stressed the need for each member to sign in at the monthly meetings and introduced a new incentive to do so. Each time a member signs in at the monthly meetings, their name is put into a drawing for a $100 gift card to be given at the October meeting.  This is to encourage regular attendance at the monthly meetings.
  • Brenda Bannister conducted the door prize drawing which was won by Vicky Galcynski. Vicky won a layer cake of pretty fabric.
  • Linda Brown gave an update about the Quilt-Til-You-Wilt mini retreat. At the close of the meeting 35 people have signed up for the mini retreat.  Today was the last day to sign up for it.  The dates of the mini retreat are May 18-20 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Ellerslie, GA
  • Cathy Poyner gave a brief overview of the annual retreat and announced the dates of next year’s annual retreat. She said there is a $50 deposit and each member can make monthly payments throughout the year.  Retreat must be paid in full by February 2024 SSQG meeting.
  • Robyn Shreve gave a brief overview of Quilts of Valor. Announced a sew day on June 3rd at Cornerstone Baptist from 9a.m. until 4 p.m.  She said that the team is working on having kits available at the sew day.  We will be having a presentation of quilt on Friday, June 2nd at 10:30 a.m.  at Cornerstone and invited all SSQG members and friends to attend.  Robyn also asked that members bring FQs to the May meeting for a ½ raffle to benefit QOV in which QOV will keep ½ all FQs donated and the raffle winner will get ½.    Gail then encouraged all members to join QOVF and nominate anyone who has served and been touched by war.
  • Julie Arsenault gave an update on Community Service. The sew days and kits for NICU quilts has been very successful.  We have about 40 quilts made for NICU.  All kits that have been picked up are due back at the July meeting completed.  The required size for NICU quilts is 24×36 inches.  She also said that they have collected over 80 crocheted hats for the NICU.    The next Community Service sew day is August 19 at Cornerstone Baptist. 
  • Gail McLain was featured speaker at today’s meeting. She spoke on Organizing Sewing Spaces. She gave many great tips and resources for organizing your sewing space.  She will send the powerpoint presentation via email at a later time. 
  • There was a 15 minute break for sales, questions, and restrooms.
  • Several members participated in Show & Tell. Pictures will be posted on FB page.
  • The monthly raffle drawing was won by Linda Brown.

  • Karen Moore gave an overview of upcoming programs:
    • May Program: Presentation of Quilt to VFW, Silent Auction Fundraiser, and Annual Quilt Raffle drawing. Members are asked to have all donations for Silent Auction turned in no later than May 20th.
    • June Program: Basic Machine Maintenance by Tabby Champion, Featherweight Specialist.
    • July Program: Interrogating Your Quilt by Tammy Silvers of tamarinis.com
    • August Program: Lecture with Trunk Show by Diane Knott of butterflythreadsquilting.com
    • September Program: Installation of new officers and our 2nd Anniversary celebration

 

  • Lee Ann Scogins gave a WIP update. Project #4 is due at the May meeting.  There are currently 14-16 members participating in the WIP program.
  • Mary Stevens and Linda Brown gave an update from the Nominating Committee. A survey was given to each person in attendance asking their strengths and how they would like to serve next year. 
  • Gail McLain reminded people to sign in and update directory. Username is: first and last name with no spaces.  Password is birthdate month and day (4 digits) followed by your first and last initials. 
  • Meeting was adjourned at 12:34 p.m.
